Gellért Bath – Budapest

by admin

The Gellért Thermal Bath and Hotel is known world-wide and highly favored by foreigners. It was built in a secession style and opened its gates in 1918. The pool area was expanded in 1927 by the wave-bath and in 1934 by the effervescent bath.

We find records about the “miraculous” springs spurting up on the territory of the Bath from as early a date as the 15th century. These springs were later favoured by the Turks as well, as they were larger and hotter than the Buda baths of the period. In the 17th century, the site was named Sárosfürdő (Mud bath) because of the fine spring silt that was pushed up together with the spring water and settled at the bottom of the pools.

In the course of the modernisation accomplished in our days, the sitting-pool in the swimming complex, the outdoor sitting pool and the children’s pool were renovated; they were equipped with a state-of-the art water filtering and circulation device. At present, nearly all healing facilities may be used in the Gellért Thermal Bath. The Bath includes a department offering complex thermal bath facilities (daytime/outpatient hospital), it also has an inhalatorium.

Water supply to the Bath is ensured by the spring accesses established inside the Gellért hill. The water is a hot spring water with calcium, magnesium and hydrogen-carbonate as well as sulphate-chloride, also containing sodium and with a significant content of fluoride ions.

Therapeutic suggestions: degenerative joint diseases, spinal deformity, chronic and sub-acute arthritis, discus hernia, neuralgia, vasoconstriction, circulatory disturbances, and inhalation for the chronic diseases of respiratory organs.

The original parts of the bath – colorful mosaics, columns, statues, vases and spouts – are all master pieces of art!

Do you want to have a little rest and just feel the stunning atmosphere? There are a lot of place for sitting or lying down, we suggest you to try one of these bench.

So beautiful! I could imagine this kind of pool at home – if I would have a house with enough place for that.

The water temperature depends on which pool you will choose and varies from 26’C to 38’C but the plunge pool with cold water is also available.

The two-story bath chamber with glass ceiling and loggia, ca. 700 m² in size. Where else can you  swim in healing water below a stained-glass atrium?

The bath has been the occasional party venue of cool bath parties, like a spectacular Cinetrip party, or the party night venue of the Night of Baths, one of the energetic and energizing Budapest festivals. But most parties these days take place in Szechenyi Bath or Lukacs Bath.

The rooftop can be opened in case of good weather and sunshine.

The Gellert Bath is one of the oldest baths of Budapest. Its elegance and monumental size offer a truly splendid site, a must see while you are exploring this city.

The bath opened its doors to the public in 1918. The wave bath was added and in 1927 and the jacuzzi in 1934. During the renovations of the recent years, the sitting bath in the pool, the outdoor pool and the children’s pool have been renovated.

The outdoor swimming pool here with wave and bubbling bath, surrounded by the villas of the Gellert Hill, is a unique Budapest experience found right in the heart of the city center, minutes away from the famous Vaci street.

Evlia Celebi, Turkish (1611-1684) traveler has written the following:
“One must stay in the water until the body becomes red, then go out quickly and keep the body warm.”
His words are actual today, too and if you have a chance, do not miss to visit Budapest, the world capital of thermal baths!
